The Casa Ancestral Community Museum
The Casa Ancestral, designed by award-winning Bolivian architect Domingo Izquierdo, is a community-run archaeological and cultural museum in Visigsa, Bolivia. The building responds to the site’s landscape, local environment and culture, and covers an area of approximately 1,000 square feet. It contains an exhibit room, café, patio and restrooms.
Proceeds from the museum and associated activities are dedicated to development projects determined by the community.
The construction of the museum was made possible by individual donations and the commitment, active participation and leadership of community members. After over a year’s work, the Casa Ancestral was inaugurated, according to traditional rites, on July 26, 2013.
It is located midway between the colonial city of Potosí, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the Salt Flats of Uyuni, the largest in the world.
